Voting Systems and Strategic Manipulation: an Experimental Study

چکیده

This paper presents experiments analyzing the strategic behavior of voters under three voting systems: plurality rule, approval voting, and the Borda count. Strategic behavior is significantly different under each treatment (voting system). Plurality rule leads voters to play in a more sophisticated manner, but not necessarily insincerely, displaying the lowest levels of manipulation. The opposite holds for the Borda count games, where players are the least sophisticated but the most insincere. Approval voting shows intermediate levels of strategic behavior. In terms of social efficiency, plurality rule unexpectedly performs better than both approval voting and the Borda count. Yet, plurality rule is the weakest performer under Condorcet efficiency, whereas approval voting and the Borda count perform remarkably well even with a small electorate. ∗Financial support from Andrew Schotter and the Center of Experimental and Social Sciences at NYU is gratefully acknowledged. Strategic Manipulation in Voting Systems

In this thesis, we are going to study the strategic manipulation of voting rules, mostly scoring rules. In the first part, we focus on naive manipulation, where we have a coalition of manipulators and the other voters vote sincerely. In Section 1.4 we introduce a new measure of manipulability of voting rules, which reflects both the size and the prevalence of the manipulating coalitions and is ...

Manipulation in Voting: Strategic Voting and Strategic Nomination

In this paper the concepts of manipulation as strategic voting (misrepresentation of true preferences) and strategic nomination (by adding, or removing alternatives) are investigated. The connection between Arrow’s and Gibbard-Satterthwaite theorems is discussed from the viewpoint of dilemma between dictatorship and manipulability.

Voting System: elections

A voting system allows voters to choose between options. And, an election is an important voting system to select a cendidate. In 1951, Arrow’s impossibility theorem in [1] showed that intuitively desirable criteria were mutually contradictory. Gibbard(1973) [2] and Satterthwaite(1975) [3] independently proved that for at least three alternatives, every Pareto optimal and non-manipulable choice...

NP-Hard Manipulations of Voting Schemes

Voting schemes are common social choice function that allow voters to aggregate their preferences in a socially desirable way. Unfortunately, the GibbardSatterthwaite theorem states that many of these schemes are susceptible to manipulation. Thus, a highly desirable quality, such that a scheme is resistant to manipulaion, is lacking in voting schemes. Since non-manipulability cannot be guarante...

Sequential Voting and Agenda Manipulation: The Case of Forward Looking Tie-Breaking

We study the possibilities for agenda manipulation under strategic voting for two prominent sequential voting procedures, the amendment and the successive procedure. We show that a well-known result for tournaments, namely that the successive procedure is (weakly) more manipulable than the amendment procedure at any given preference profile, extends to arbitrary majority quotas. Moreover, our c...
